I worked at The Roanoke Times from 2001-03. I filled almost every role on the News copy desk: copy editor, copy chief, night news editor, wire editor and sometimes even weekend metro editor. I also worked as Features copy chief for about a year. My first night as night news editor was the day the space shuttle Columbia exploded. I still made deadline.

This is also where I worked on Sept. 11, 2001. I arrived at
10 a.m. and worked almost nonstop for two days. Scroll down to see our free special edition that we published that terrible Tuesday afternoon.
Although my tenure here was marked by two tragedies, the headlines I wrote at The Roanoke Times were some of my most playful. In 2001, I won first place in headline writing from the Virginia Press Association. I also received the company's Landmark Award for excellence in headline writing.

Yes, that's me
