I worked at the AJC as an intern in 1995 (just before the 1996 Summer Olympics) and again as a full-timer in 1998. I was a news copy editor and also the Assistant Editions Manager. In that role, I acted as a liaison between the newsroom and the composing room. It was my responsibility to meet page deadlines and to fix last-minute errors on the composing room floor.
In 1999, during the World Series between the Atlanta Braves
and New York Yankees, we printed the wrong score of that night's
game on our sports front. As this unfolded at 3 a.m., I was the one tasked with saying those three famous words: "Stop the presses!" It is not nearly as fun as the movies make it out to be.
